How To Build a Chair: Beginner Tips

Chairs can be both functional and decorative. These can be part of the many elements in a room or become the focal point of a specific area. A well-designed and constructed chair can be an interesting investment and a wonderful conversation piece. The good news is that building a chair does not have to be an exercise in futility. With a good plan and a lot of patience, it can be done. Here are tips on how to start a project:

Choose your design.

Before taking out tools from the shed or buying anything, make sure there is a plan for the chair. A plan is simply the illustrated design of the chair that deconstructs its structure so it is easy to see all the parts that make up a whole.

When choosing a plan, look for one that matches your skill level. A complicated design can result to a stunning work of art but for someone with very little experience in carpentry work, this can be too difficult to execute.

A feasible design should:

be easy to understand
result to a comfortable and stable finished product
have symmetry and balance

Choose the functions.

A chair is not just for seating, it can also be a piece of furniture for relaxing, lounging, working or even sleeping. Consider all the important functions that you might want to integrate into the chair. Do you want it to be adjustable? Do you want it plain or with cushions? Do you want it to recline? Would you prefer one with an extendable leg rest? Do you want armrests?

Prepare your tools.

The most basic materials needed for building a chair are:

measuring tape
a manual or power saw
pencil and ruler
hammer and nails
drills
chisel
glue

Obtain your materials.

Wood is a popular material for making chairs, although steel and plastic are also good options. Wood, however, is relatively easy to work with.

The first step in choosing materials is to identify the best variety for the project. Two of the most popular varieties are cedar and southern pine. Cedar is resistant to bugs and moisture while pine is durable and attractive. Many home depot and construction supply stores offer pre-cut lumber that can be cut to size.

Making the first cut.

The cardinal rule about carpentry is simple: measure twice, cut once. Take the measuring tape, measure the length, width, thickness and height of the wood. Mark the points carefully and measure again to come up with the right template. Keep in mind that once you cut into the wood, there is no turning back. Do not hesitate about referring to the plan frequently to ensure that you are making the right measurements.

Once the measurements are completed, begin cutting the pieces for the legs, seat, back, front, arm rests, etc. A table saw will work for most straight cuts but for curved ones, a band saw is the better option.

Putting it together.

Mark the areas for the slots and the nails. Using a hammer, gently tap the wood to create slots. Slots allow different parts to be slid together to form one seamless piece. These pieces may be sealed with a glue or kept in place with nails.

Tip: If using glue, clamp the pieces together for at least 24 hours to dry completely. For nails, make sure to use the right size for the job. Nails that are too small will not hold the chair together while nails that are too big can split the wood open.

Once all the pieces are put together, use a sander to smooth out the wood. If the wood is not treated and is not known to be bug-resistant, apply a coat of protectant. Use a brush or spray to apply paint or varnish.

Different Types Of Chairs You Can Build

No home or office is complete without chairs. There are many different types of chairs available in the market, offering consumers various styles and designs to adorn their homes and offices. Chairs, no matter how you approach it, add style, elegance, and charm to wherever they are placed. Most important of all, however, is the fact that people need to sit down somewhere comfortable. Below are a few of the different types of seats you may put in your home or office.

Office Chairs: Ergonomics and Style

Executive, swivel task and ergonomic chairs are most prominent in offices. They are available from dozens of shops, and are highly affordable. Price depends on the design and materials that have been used to make them. Quality is of utmost importance, so you need to pay attention to the manufacturing quality as well.

Trend and fashion depends on the type of office culture. Some people go for old-fashioned furniture supplies, while others go for modern styles. It does not matter what style is chosen, manufacturers offer various different types to accommodate all types of buyers.

Most common office furniture includes low, mid, and high back chairs. Ergonomic chairs should be bought. This is due to the fact that most employees will spend their time sitting down and working on their computers. Quality and comfort are of high importance, especially when it comes to buying chairs for managers, CEOs, or presidents of the company. These chairs have to give off the impression of authority and power.

Chairs for Home: Comfort and Elegance

There are two types of chairs available for homes: outdoor and indoor. Outdoor chairs need to be weatherproof to withstand rain and other adverse weather conditions. These chairs normally sit on the front porch or a back patio. They allow homeowners to hold outdoor barbecues, or enjoy warm summer nights, among other things. Pico chairs are also popular - they are essentially camp-styled seats that can be folded up when not in use.

There are many types of chairs for indoor seating. Recliners and wooden seats are the most common. Recliners are found in the family or living room where the television is located. They come in various styles, though most use padded cloth covering, while some models make use of leather.

The dining room is where you need the nicest seats. Most people go with wooden chairs with padded seats; these usually have high backs. Some even have armrests, though these are especially expensive. You can find many other types including canopy chairs, bean bags, kids' high chairs, etc. Most of these are found in living rooms where comfort is prioritized over everything else. Parents with children will have high chairs that are built for kids.

A wide variety of chairs are available in the market right now. The above are just a few of the prominent ones that we use in our homes and offices. Chairs have evolved over the years. Style, elegance, and charm are now focused on besides comfort, quality and materials.
